Pinnacle of temple? Trumpeting stone The Trumpeting Stone
A unique stone with a Hebrew inscription was found in the rubble. The end of the inscription was broken off, but what remains reads, “to the place of trumpeting….” A clue as to the purpose of this stone and its inscription is given by Josephus. He tells of priests who stood at the top of the Temple Mount and blew the trumpet, thus ushering in the Sabbath. “At the point where it was the custom for one of the priests to stand and to give notice, by sound of trumpet, in the afternoon of the approach, and on the following evening of the close, of every seventh day, announcing to the people the respective hours for ceasing work and for resuming their labors” (War IV.ix.12). The large stone had a niche in it where the priest apparently stood for sounding the trumpet. It is not certain whether the inscription was to inform the priest where to stand or if it was a note for the builders as to where to properly place this stone. The stone probably sat on the top, southwest corner of the Temple Mount. Pinnacle of temple?

Robinson's Arch area from west
The arch is named after its discoverer, Edward Robinson, who first visited Jerusalem in 1838. The remains of the spring of the arch are still visible. Later scholars thought that this arch was the first of a series that was built to support a bridge leading to the Upper City (Western Hill). Such a series of arches is known to exist further north in connection with Wilson’s Arch. Mazar’s excavations conclusively proved that there was but a single arch at this point and it supported a monumental staircase which led from the Temple Mount to the street below in the Central Valley. The staircase was approached from the south, and it was supported by a series of arches. At the end of the staircase, a single large arch (13.5 m/44.3 ft. wide) supported the passageway as it crossed the street below. Robinson's Arch area from west
