Palace of Aranjuez Aranjuez is currently between the Tagus and the sea of Ontígola (one of the oldest reservoirs in Europe). It was in the 12th century when the Santiago Order settled in the area due to the lushness of its landscape and the mildness of its climate which is a beneficiary of the waters of the Tagus and Jarama. Like Real Sitio, its history began in the fifteenth century, when the master Lorenzo Suárez de Figueroa ordered the construction of a house-palace to the north of the present Royal Palace, destined to the recreation of the members of the order After the Bourbon restoration in the person of Alfonso XII, the Royal Palace of Aranjuez housed the family of the Dukes of Montpensier. It was in the days before the wedding of the King with the daughter of these (and Alfonso's cousin), Maria de las Mercedes of Orleans. Luego, en 1931, la Segunda República declaró el Real Sitio Monumento Histórico Artístico y lo abrió al público. Fue el primero de una larga serie de reconocimientos que culminaron en 2001, cuando la Unesco lo inscribió como Patrimonio de la Humanidad.
