1 Preterite Next we’re going to learn how to talk about the past in Spanish. One way is to talk about an action that started and finished in the past. This tense is called the preterite. In this presentation, we’ll look at the regular preterite endings.

2 Preterite In English, a preterite form looks like this:
walk > walked play > played say > said drive > drove be > was, were Some are regular (predictable): play > played Others are irregular (unpredictable): go > went

3 AR Preterite Forms The endings for –AR verbs are:
Notice the accent marks on the yo and él forms. They are very important! Also notice that the nosotros form is the same in both the present and the preterite. yo - é nosotros - amos tú - aste -vosotros asteis él / ella / ud. - ó ellos /ellas / uds. - aron

15 What about –ER & –IR verbs?
The endings are identical for –er & -ir: Í imos iste isteis ió ieron

16 Take a closer look! -ar -er / -ir -é -í -aste -iste -ó -ió -amos -imos
-é -í -aste -iste -ó -ió -amos -imos -asteis -isteis -aron -ieron The endings are very similar, except that the –er/-ir verb endings always contain an –i- and the –ar verb endings never do.

23 dar The verb dar is a little bit unusual because it also does not take accent marks. And, it uses the er/ir endings: yo di tú diste él dio nosotros dimos vosotros disteis ellos dieron

26 IR verbs – Stem – Changing Verbs (Sandal Verbs)
–ir stem-changing verbs only show a change in the third person forms (él / ella / ud. and ellos / ellas / uds.), and the change is different in the preterite. Present >> Preterite o – ue >> o – u e – ie >> e – i e – i >> e – i dormir (o > ue) >> durmió ; durmieron servir (e > i) >> sirvió; sirvieron preferir (e > ie) >> prefirió; prefirieron Well, guess what? They change in the él/ellos forms only: yo dormí tú dormiste él durmió nosotros dormimos vosotros dormisteis ellos durmieron
