22 The verb “Ser” Before we get started. Some definitions:
Conjugate: to change the verb from the infinitive to a form that matches the subject. Conjugations: The forms of the verb after you conjugate it. Infinitive: means and unchanged (or unconjugated) verb. For example: “Ser” to be, “comer” to eat Verb: The action being done. (end in –ar –er or –ir) Subject: The person doing the action.

In English the verb to be is irregular. In Spanish is also irregular. You have to memorize the forms and their meanings. ¡Atención! *the pronouns are not necessary to have to form a complete sentence!  “Soy de Chicago” means the same thing as “Yo soy de Chicago” Sometimes, the pronoun clarifies the sentence. For example, “es de Chicago” could mean “He is from Chicago,” “She is from Chicago,” or “You (formal) are from Chicago.” A pronoun can help clear the confusion:  Ella es de Chicago. (She is from Chicago) But if you already knew you were talking about “her” or “she,” then “Es de Chicago” can mean “She is from Chicago.”
