about the preterite:

4 1. For regular preterite tense verb conjugations,
drop the ending of the infinitive and add the following endings in its place:

5 Drop –AR, and add… yo ___é nosotros _____amos nosotras tú ___aste vosotros ______asteis vosotras él ellos ella ___ó ellas ______aron Usted Ustedes

6 Drop –ER, and add… yo ___í nosotros ______imos nosotras tú ___iste vosotros ______isteis vosotras él ellos ella ___ió ellas ______ieron Usted Ustedes

7 Drop –IR, and add… yo ___í nosotros _____imos nosotras tú ___iste vosotros ______isteis vosotras él ellos ella ___ió ellas ______ieron Usted Ustedes

8 Yes, it’s true!!! “ER” and “IR” preterite tense verbs share the same endings!!
Easy!! 

9 2. –AR and –ER stem-changing verbs do NOT
have a stem-change in the preterite!! YEA!!! The “e” remains an “e” and the “o” remains an “o”.

10 3. –CAR verbs will end in –qué in the 1st person
singular (yo) of the preterite. This is for easier pronunciation. 4. –GAR verbs will end in –gué in the 1st person singular (yo) of the preterite. This is for easier 5. –ZAR verbs will end in –cé in the 1st person

11 6. The preterite is used to express completed
past action. The action has a definite beginning and a definite end.

12 7. Look for clues. Look for adverbial expressions
that imply the preterite - completed past action, action with a definite beginning AND a definite end: ayer – yesterday ayer por la mañana – yesteday morning el año pasado – last year el sábado pasado – last Saturday hace una hora – an hour ago la última vez – the last time la primera vez – the first time anoche – last night

13 First, write the English equivalent for the Spanish
infinitive. Then,conjugate the infinitive into the preterite tense. Also, write the English translation of the preterite 1st person singular (yo) as it will be the basis for the other translations of each person.

It is an irregular preterite tense verb and just has to be memorized.  It does NOT follow a predictable conjugation pattern in the preterite, therefore it is irregular. Notice – NO ACCENTS!!!!! 
