The Past Tense in Spanish Monday: 1 - 5

2 Past Tense in Spanish In Spanish past actions are expressed with the preterite (el preterito) and the imperfect (el imperfecto) tense. Preterite = completed past actions I went to the store. Imperfect = ongoing past actions When I lived in NY, I went to the store everyday.

3 The Preterite Tense of Regular Verbs
-er and –ir endings are the same. 1st and 3rd person singular take accents. Nosotros forms of –ar and –ir are the same as present tense. -ar and –er verbs that have stem changes in the present DO NOT have stem changes in the preterite. Preterite –ar verb endings -é -amos -aste -ó -aron Hablé con mi padre ayer. Preterite –er -ir verb endings -í -imos -iste -ío -ieron Ella escribío la carta ya.
