Los sustantivos son usados para indicar el género de las palabras. Sustantivos include el, la, las, and los. As you noticed, when I used them in my story, these words indicated the gender of the subject. Gender is a major part of the spanish language. The written and oral part of the spanish language relies on sustantivos to differentiate the gender. Gender is important to define an object but there is not definite reason why it is necessary.
