6 What is a STEM-CHANGING VERB?
A verb in which the E in the stem changes to E or IE; or the O changes to UE when you conjugate it. In what CONJUGATIONS will the stem-changes occur? It will change in all the conjugations except Nosotros & Vosotros and the YO of some irregular verbs. EXAMPLE: QUERER (IE) Yo quiero Nosotros queremos Tú quieres Vosotros queréis Él/Ella quiere Ellos/Ellas quieren Ud. Uds. EXAMPLE: VENIR (ie) Yo vengo Nosotros venimos Tú vienes Vosotros venéis Él/Ella viene Ellos/Ellas vienen Ud. Uds.

1. to be able to= Poder (ue) 2. should= Deber 3. to prefer= Preferir (ie) Querer (ie) 4. to want= 5. to plan/think about= Pensar (ie) 6. to need= Necesitar Tener que (-go, ie) 7. to have to= 8. to be going to/”Let’s go”= Ir a 9. to have just= Acabar de

8 Common Verbs Used in Double Verb Construction: TRANSLATE the sentences
1. Poder (UE-to be able to) = Can you swim? ¿Puedes nadar? Debes dormir 8 horas. 2. Deber (should)= You should sleep 8 hours. Prefiero correr. 3. Preferir (IE-to prefer) = I prefer to run. 4. Querer (IE-to want) = Do you want to sing? ¿Quieres cantar? 5. Pensar (IE-to plan/think about)=We plan to go. Pensamos ir. 6. Necesitar (to need) = She needs to cook. Ella necesita cocinar. Tenemos que comer. 7. Tener que (IE-to have to)=We have to eat. Vamos a jugar. 8. Ir a (to be going to/”Let’s go”)=Let’s go play. 9. Acabar de (to have just)= I just studied. Acabo de estudiar.
