2 El Pretérito Is one of the past tenses. Tells what happened.
Is a completed action. I called my sister last night. She talked on the phone. The phone rang at 12:30 PM.

3 To find the stem of the verb, remove the -ar, -er, or -ir.
trabajar – trabaj (to work) escirbir - escrib (to write) correr – corr (to run)

4 -ar verb endings -é -amos -aste -asteis -ó -aron

5 Now you conjugate an –ar verb:
tomar el sol (to sunbathe) yo ________ tú ________ usted, (él, ella) ________ nosotros ____________ vosotros ___________ ustedes, (ellos, ellas) _________

10 Remember: 1. The yo and usted forms have accents.
2. The nosotros forms of –ar and –ir verbs are the same as the present tense form. 3. –Er verbs and –Ir verbs in the Pretérito use the same endings.

14 Irregular Pretérito Verbs “Crazy Yo’s”
Los verbos que terminan con –gar, –car, y -zar cambian en la forma Yo. Drop the –cir and add j Keep the irregular endings we just covered except for the 3rd person plural where you drop the i. Decir – dije, dijiste, dijo, dijimos, dijisteis, dijeron Conducir – conduje, condujiste, condujo, condujimos, condujisteis, condujeron

22 Stem changing in the pretérito
The same verbs that have stem changes in the present tense (Boot verbs) have changes in the pretérito as well, but only in the 3rd person singular and plural. (Heel and Toe verbs). 24 Oír, Leer, Creer, Caer, Construir – i-y change
In order to maintain pronunciation these verbs change the i to y in the 3rd person singular and plural. In the other forms the i takes an accent. Yo oí Yo leí Nos. oímos Nos. leímos Tú oíste Tú leíste Vos. oísteis Vos. leísteis Ud. oyó Ud. leyó Uds. oyeron Uds. leyeron

26 To Saber or not to Conocer
Use conocer to express being familiar or acquainted with a person, place or thing. Conozco a México muy bien, lo he visitado varias veces. ¿Conoces a la chica de la clase de español? Use saber with facts, information or when telling how to do something. ¿Sabes quién es esa chica? Yo la conozco, es María. ¿Sabes qué? No me gusta tu forma de ser.
