Tú vs. Usted (Ud.) There are two different ways to say “you” in Spanish. Use “tú”: (informal) when you are talking to friends, family, people your own age or younger than you and pets. Use “Usted”: (formal) when you are talking to people you don’t know well, people who are older than you, people in positions of authority, and in general to show respect. (Usted is almost always abbreviated as Ud. with a capitol U)
