1 El Pretérito- Spell-Changing Verbs
OBJECTIVE: TLW- Analyze verbs that have a spell change in the preterite tense. TLW also use these verbs to construct short sentences and answer questions. Some verbs have a change in the spelling in the preterite tense. (Verbs that end in –car, -gar, and –zar). This is done in order to keep the verb’s sound. The spell change will only take place in the “Yo” form of the preterite. These are the 3 types of spell changes: -car> -qué, -gar> -gué, -zar> -cé ONLY TAKES PLACE IN THE YO FORM!!!

Common verbs with a spell change in the preterite: Verb List #6 jugar- to play (sport/game) fregar- to mop llegar- to arrive publicar- to publish pagar- to pay rezar- to pray rogar- to beg/pray regar las plantas- to water the plants buscar- to look for/search platicar- to talk/chat ***tocar- to play (instrument)*** almorzar- to eat lunch comenzar- to start/begin ***INSTRUMENTOS MUSICALES*** empezar- to start/begin ***piano (el piano), guitar (la guitarra), organizar- to organize drums (las baterías), saxaphone (el saxofón), cegar- to go blind trumpet (la trompeta), cymbals (los címbalos) practicar- to practice tuba (la tuba), flute (la flauta), clarient sacar fotos- to take pictures (el clarinete), violin (el violín), harmonica cazar- to hunt (la armónica), harp (la arpa), tamborine cruzar- to cross (la pandereta), trombone (el trombón) danzar- to dance

Ejemplos: 1. Last summer, I took a lot of pictures. El verano pasado, yo saqué muchas fotos. 2. Last March, I hunted in the woods/forest. El marzo pasado, yo cacé en el bosque. 3. Yesterday, I watered the plants. Ayer, yo regué las plantas. 4. Last week, I chatted with my mother. La semana pasada, yo platiqué con mi madre. 5. Two years ago, I played the flute . Hace dos años que yo toqué la flauta (OPTION 1) - Yo toqué la flauta hace dos años. (OPTION 2)
