2 Punctuation Written Spanish requires 2 question marks and 2 exclamation marks, 1 at the beginning and 1 at the end 1st upside down punctuation tells you a question or exclamation will follow No other punctuation uses follows this pattern (e.g. period, comma)

3 Examples .¡Muy bien! ¡Hola! ¿Y tú? ¿Cómo te llamas?

4 Definite Articles & country
Some countries use definite articles el, la, los with country name whereas other prefer not to. The use of definite articles is optional

5 Examples La Argentina = Argentina El Ecuador = Ecuador
El Paraguay = Paraguay Los Estados Unidos = Estados Unidos El Perú = Perú

6 Formal-Informal Spanish has TWO words for YOU.
Use informal tú when talking to someone you refer to by 1st name. (peers) Use formal usted (Ud.) when talking to someone you would refer to with a title (señor or señora, adults, authority figures)

The plural you in most Spanish-speaking countries is ustedes (Uds.) In Spain you have 2 choices: When speaking to more than 1 person in the “peer” category—use informal vosotros (males or males & females) or vosotras (females) When speaking to more than 1adult or authority—use formal ustedes (Uds.)

8 Examples Singular Plural Inf Tú Uds./vosotros-as Form Ud Uds.

9 Time You can find out the time by asking ¿Qué hora es?
When giving time you use Es la una for 1 o’clock and Son las (+ number) for o’clock. Examples: 1:00 = Es la una. 2:00 = Son las dos.

10 Time Continued Use y ( + number of minutes through veintinueve) to add minutes to the hours. Or menos (+ the number of minutes through veintinueve) to indicate time before the hour. Examples: 2:29 = Son las dos y veintinueve 2:31 = Son las tres menos veintinueve

11 Time Continued Add y cuarto for quarter past the hour, y media for half past the hour, and menos cuarto for quarter to the hour . Examples: 4:15 = Son las cuatro y cuarto. 4:30 = Son las cuatro y media. 4:45 = Son las cinco menos cuarto.

12 Time Continued A.M. is equivalent to de la mañana ( in the morning)
P.M. is equivalent to de la tarde ( in the afternoon), and de la noche ( at night) Examples: 5:00 A.M. = Son las cinco de la mañana. 7:57 P.M.= Son las ocho menos tres de la noche.

13 Practice Fix what's wrong with these sentences. Qué hora es?
Yo soy de el Argentina. Choose either tú , ud., uds, or vosotros-as 1. Sister 2. Teacher 3. 2 friends (female) 4. Group if parents’ friends ( male and female)
