3 What do they look like? There are five possessive adjectives and their variations: 1) mi, mis 2) tu, tus 3) su, sus 4) nuestro, nuestra, nuestros, nuestras 5) vuestro, vuestra, vuestros, vuestras

4 mi, tu, su Three possessive adjectives (mi, tu, su) have only two forms: singular and plural mitu mistus su sus

5 Agreement * Possessive adjectives agree with the nouns they modify. That is, they agree with the thing possessed, not the possessor mi libromy book mis librosmy books tu plumayour pen tus plumasyour pens

6 Agreement continued Mi, tu and su do not have masculine and feminine forms. They stay the same regardless of the gender of the nouns they modify. mi amigo / mi amiga tus hermanos / tus hermanas su libro / sus plumas

7 More with mi, tu & su mi means my tu means your Mi casa es tu casa. (My house is your house.) Su, like tu, can mean your. The difference between your (tu) and your (su) lies in the degree of formality the speaker wishes to convey. Mi casa es tu casa. (Speaking to someone you would address as tú) Mi casa es su casa. (Speaking to someone you would address as usted)

8 tu vs. tú Note: The two words tu and tú are pronounced the same. tú (with the written accent) is the subject pronoun meaning you (informal). tu (without the written accent) is the possessive adjective meaning your (informal).

9 The many meaning of su Su and sus have six possible meanings: 1) her 2) his 3) their 4) your (singular, formal) 5) your (plural) 6) its Context will clarify which meaning is intended. 1) María busca a su hermana. (María is looking for her sister.) 2) Juan busca a su hermana. (Juan is looking for his sister) 3) Ellos buscan a su hermana. (They are looking for their sister) 4) Doctor, ¿dónde está su clínica? (Doctor, where is your clinic? 5) ¿Tienen sus lápices Uds.? Do you (all) have your pencils? 6) El pájaro está en su jaula. (The bird is in its cage.

20 When the meaning is unclear *If the meaning of su is not clear from the context of the sentence, a prepositional phrase is used in place of su María busca a la hermana de él. (María looks for his sister.) El hombre busca las llaves de ella. (The man looks for her keys.) María busca el cuaderno de Juan. (María looks for Juans notebook.) El hombre busca las llaves de Samantha. (The man looks for Samanthas keys.)
