5 El subjuntivo The subjunctive is not a tense (when an action takes place), it is a mood (how speaker feels about the action). There are 3 moods in Spanish: indicative, imperative (commands) and the subjunctive. The subjunctive is not really used in English.

6 El indicativo vs. el subjuntivo
We have already learned the indicative- this expresses things that are known to be true. The indicative includes the present tense, preterite, imperfect, future, and conditional. The subjunctive mood is used to describe actions that are not certain

7 Cómo: El subjuntivo The present subjunctive is formed the same way as the Ud./Uds. commands. Put the verb in the present tense yo form. Drop the O. Then add: -ar -er / -ir e emos a amos es éis as áis e en a an

8 Cuándo: El subjuntivo It is used to talk about doubts, wishes, and non-factual situations. It is commonly used in making recommendations

9 Cuándo: El subjuntivo Subjunctive sentences have two parts, each with a different subject. They are connected by the word que Ella sugiere que yo aprenda francés The first part uses the indicative (recommendation, suggestion, etc..) + que + second part in the subjunctive (what should happen)

10 Cuándo: El subjuntivo Verbs that are often followed by que + subjunctive Decir Prohibir Insistir en Querer Necesitar Recomendar Permitir Sugerir Preferir The present subjunctive has the same spelling changes and irregular yo form changes as the Ud./Uds. commands
