3 When do I use el pretérito? 1.) When there has been a definite ending. 2.) When something is over and done with. 3.) When you would use the ed ending in English.

6 Examples Ciara bought a shirt yesterday. (comprar) Ciara compró una camisa ayer. I wore a sweatshirt to the gym last night. (llevar) Yo llevé una sudadera al gimnasio anoche. We danced at the party last week. (bailar) Nosotros bailamos en la fiesta la semana pasada.

7 Examples You all ate tacos for lunch.(comer) Ustedes comieron tacos en el almuerzo I wrote a letter to my girlfriend.(escribir) Yo escribí una carta a mi novia.

8 In el pretérito, verbs that end in -car, -gar, and -zar are only irregular in the Yo form. Buscar busqué I looked for. Jugar jugué I played… Almorzaralmorcé I ate lunch **These verbs have regular preterite endings in every other form.**

9 Examples I looked for a blue skirt at Macys last night. Yo busqué una falda azul en Macys anoche. She looked for a dress for the dance. Ella buscó una falda por la fiesta. We played baseball after class. Nosotros jugamos béisbol después de clase. I ate lunch at Taco Bell. Yo almorcé en Taco. I played soccer last year. Yo jugué al fútbol el año pasado.

10 Ir and Ser Ir and Ser have the exact same conjugation in el pretérito. The only way to know the difference is context clues. Yo fuiI went/was Tu fuiste You went/were Él/Ella fue He she went/was UstedYou (formal) went/were Nosotros(as)fuimos We went/were Ellos, ellas fueron They went/were ustedes You all went/ were **The verbs ir an ser have no accents.**

11 Examples I went to Wendys last night. Yo Fui a Wendys anoche. The trip was fantastic. El viaje fue fantasticó. The tacos were delicious. Los tacos fueron deliciosos. We went to the movies on Friday. Nosotoros fuimos al cine el viernes.

12 Dar=to give Ver=to see Di vi Diste viste Dio vio Dimos vimos Dieron vieron *These verbs are irregular because there are no accent marks and because dar is an (ar) verb that uses er/ir verb endings.

16 Examples I wanted to leave the party early. Yo quise salir la fiesta temprano. Lorenzo did his homework yesterday. Lorenzo hizo la tarea ayer. They told the truth. Ellos dijeron la verdad. My little brother set the table last night. Mi hermanito puso la mesa anoche.
