2 I. General Infromation 1. The present tense (el presente) of regular verbs is formed by dropping the infinitive ending -ar, -er, or -ir and adding personal endings.

3 A. Uses of the Present Tense
The present tense is used to express actions or situations that are going on at the present time and to express general truths.

4 B. Examples 1. ¿ Te mentinenes en contacto con tus primos?
Do you stay in touch with your cousins? 2. Sí, los llamo cada semana. Yes, I call them every week.

5 C. Other Uses 1. The present tense is also used to express habitual action or actions that will take place in the near future.

6 Examples 1. Mis padres me escriben con frecuencia.
My parents write to me often. 2. Mañana les mando una carta larga. Tomorrow, I’m sending them a long letter.

8 II. Stem Changing Verbs 1. e:ie-----> pensar-To think yo- pienso

yo- puedo tú- puedes él- puede nos- (No Change) podemos ellos- pueden

11 III. Irregular -yo- forms
1. Many -er and -ir verbs have irregular yo forms in the presents tense. Verbs ending in -cer or -cir change to -zco in the yo form; those ending in - ger or -gir change to -jo. Several verbs have irregular -go endings, and a few ahve individual irregularities.
