En la negación, van seguidas de ‘not’: The system can not function as a complete microcomputer En la pregunta, se realiza la inversión: Can you speak English?

3 FUNCIÓN Cumplen distintas funciones comunicativas. Indican la actitud del emisor con respecto al estado o acción expresada por el verbo principal: I will work Trabajaré I may work Quizás trabaje I might work Existe la posibilidad de que trabaje I can work Puedo trabajar I must work Debo trabajar I should work Debería trabajar I would work if … Trabajaría si …

4 Modales que expresan PODER
Can: capacidad o habilidad The teachers can share the results with the students. Pablo can play the guitar very well. May: posibilidad o permiso It may rain today. May I close the door? Might: posibilidad remota They might arrive later. Could: capacidad en el pasado o posibilidad He could swim when he was five. The doctor could ask for new analysis.

5 Modales que expresan DEBER
Must: obligación o suposición You must purify the substance. He must be in the laboratory now. Should: obligación moral o consejo You should see a doctor. He should try harder.

6 Modales que expresan FUTURO
Will: futuro cierto In the end, the television will replace the radio. Will you help me? Yes, I will. Would: futuro hipotético Translating this book would take a lot of time. If I had money, I would buy a car.

7 Auxiliar modal + be + participio del verbo principal
Modales en VOZ PASIVA Auxiliar modal + be + participio del verbo principal The herbicide should be used carefully. El herbicida debe ser usado cuidadosamente. The hard disk can not be removed from the computer. El disco duro no puede ser removido de la computadora. The influence of transport in food deterioration must be estimated.
