2 What is Hypothyroidism? Hypothyroidism is an inadequate secretion of thyroid hormones or the lack of secretion of the thyroid hormones.

3 What are the causes of hypothyroidism? The thyroid is controlled by the pituitary gland and the hypothalamus which are in the brain. They stimulate the thyroid gland to secrete two hormones called T 3 (triiodothyronine) and T 4 (thyroxine). These hormones help regulate metabolism. They signal for the body to increase oxygen use.

4 Who has Hypothyroidism? Hypothyroidism is common in people of every age. It is most frequent in elderly And most common in females 1 in every 10 people have a thyroid disorder 1 in every 5000 infant has hypothyroid disorder

5 What are the symptoms of hypothyroidism? EARLY SYMPTOMS Dry skin Fatigue Constipation Memory loss Weight gain Loss or thinning eyebrows Low sex drive Abdominal bloating Puffy face Cold tolerance Depression Cold hands and feet Joint and muscle pain Thin, brittle fingernails LATE SYMPTOMS Round, puffy face with sleepy appearance Dry rough skin Hair loss Husky voice Numbness or arms and legs Muscle pain Weakness Carpal tunnel syndrome (Some People) hearing loss, depression, mental confusion, uneasiness, day time sleepiness, memory problems

6 What are treatments for hypothyroidism? The most common treatment is thyroid hormone replacement therapy. This includes injections of T4, also known as levothyroxine, and T3, also known as liothyronine. These treatments replace the thyroxine in the thyroid gland. Thyroid hormone replacement therapy is a life long process and with therapy the person is expected to go back to their normal life.

7 What research has been done concerning hypothyroidism? There has been different forms of research done around the world. The Shanghai medical university in China has conducted research on thyroid disorders and how acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine can help cure these disorders. The results have shown extreme improvement in patients that were treated for a year. It also showed a connection between hypothyroidism and deficiency of kidney energy. AACE (American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists) has been working to inform women about the symptoms of hypothyroidism because they are so vague and may be confused with other disorders.
