5 Preterite of -ir stem-changing verbs You know that stem changes in the present tense take place in all forms except nosotros and vosotros. Preferir (e > ie) Prefiero ver programas deportistas.

6 Preterite of -ir stem-changing verbs Dormir (o > ue) Los hermanos duermen tarde. Pedir (e > i) Piden los espeguetis.

7 Present tense conjugation of –ir stem changing verb Yo duermo Nosotros/as dormimos Tú duermes Él duerme Ellos duermen Ella duerme Ellas duermen usted duerme ustedes duermen We call these verbs boot or shoe verbs.

9 Preterite of -ir stem-changing verbs In the preterite, -ir verbs like preferir, pedir, and dormir also have stem changes but only in the Ud./él/ella and Uds./ellos/ellas forms. In these forms e changes to i and o changes to u.

10 Preterite of -ir stem-changing verbs Mi mamá durmió por ocho horas. Mis padres prefirieron comprar esta chaqueta azul.

14 Other Irregular Verbs There are other verbs that are irregular in the preterite tense. We are going to review four more verbs. You will notice that none of these verbs have accents in the preterite tense. *Also, ser and ir are EXACTLY the same in the preterite tense; you tell the difference based upon the context in which they are used.
