Often used to begin simple sentences Hay un estudiante. There is a student. Hay unos chicos. There are some boys. Hay un profesor. There is a teacher. Hay unas plumas. There are some pens.

¿Hay? With question marks the word hay means: Is there? Or Are there?

¿Hay una piñata? Is there a piñata? ¿Hay unos gatos? Are there some cats? ¿Hay una muchacha? Is there a girl? ¿Hay un muchacho malo? Is there a bad boy?
