“In Guatemala, the face of poverty and hunger is young, indigenous and rural” fourth highest rate of chronic malnutrition in the world and highest in Latin America Currently malnutrition rate of 49.3% among children under 10.
¿Por qué? There are several reasons behind why national health services cover approximately 60% of the country; most of the rural areas lack water and sanitation systems and have a limited access to an adequate diet due to income restrictions. Guatemala is prone to natural disasters: hurricanes, earthquakes, floods and frosts are recurrent events which damage the livelihoods of an unprepared population living in vulnerable areas. Example: Tropical Depression Nº 16 caused the loss of life, housing, crops and communication infrastructures, and affected more than people.
¿Por qué es importante para nosotros? Moral reason: Illegal crop production leads to illegal immigration to countries where the drugs can be sold for the highest profit Guatemala is becoming a major corridor for the smuggling of drogas from the americans to the US
