1. Hacer, venir, and querer  The verbs hacer, querer, and venir are irregular in the preterit. Note that they all have an i in the stem. Note too that the endings for yo and usted, él, and ella are different from the endings of regular verbs.

2. Poder, poner, and saber  The verbs poder, poner, and saber all have a u in the stem.

3. Estar, andar, and tener  The verbs estar, andar, and tener all have a uv in the stem.

4. Meaning changes  Many of these verbs are not used frequently in the preterit. When they are, they take on a special meaning.

5. Decir  The verb decir (to say) is also irregular in the preterit tense.

6. Ir, ser, y dar  Some verbs have completely irregular endings. The most common are listed below. Ir and Ser are conjugated the same; you need to look at context to figure out which is being used.

7. Stem-changing preterit verbs  When verbs stem change in the preterit, they ONLY change in él/ella/usted and ellos/ellas/ustedes form (3 rd person). (the following stem changes are highlighted in orange)
