This is the starter activity This is the starter activity. Perhaps first use it as a pronunciation activity – they engage with it orally for 1 – 2 mins. Then see if the rhyme has been spotted. Elicit the meaning and point of the rhyme (i.e. as one way of fixing essentials in the brain/memory) Then give them two minutes, allowing them to use whatever strategy they like, to memorise it so that they can say it out loud OR write it down. See what they come up with in terms of how they managed it. Some of the following should emerge – writing it down, looking – closing eyes – saying it over and over, breaking it down into smaller chunks and memorising it bit by bit gradually building it up, noticing that some words are easier because they are like the English, working harder on the other parts. This is quite an involved starter which should take about 10 minutes. Try not to let it take any longer though. If you were given the task of assigning the colours of the rings to the 5 continents, how would you have done it? Design your own version. Around the outside try to justify your choice in Spanish. You will need to scaffold this with them, but encourage them to make simple reasons why a certain colour represents a continent.
