Tú, Usted, Vos= You In Spanish there are 3 different ways to say you; Tú= you- Informal (use it with friends, family members, and people your age) Usted (ud.)= you- formal (use it people older than you, people in an authority position (e.g. your teachers), people you don’t know) Vos = you- informal: Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, Spain, Guatemala, some places in Colombia

How are people greeted?

Formal conversations Saludos formales: greeting someone you do not know, or someone who is older than you, or someone who is in a higher position – at work – than you. (use usted- formal you) Estrecharse la mano(hand shake).

Informal conversations Saludos familiares: greeting someone you know, or someone around your same age (a friend, family, etc.)someone with whom you are on a first-name basis. (use tú-informal you) Estrecharse la mano, un abrazo, besos (hand shake, hug, air kiss)

Note When using Usted, you can write it abbreviated as Ud. When addressing people older than you, always use: Mr. Señor- abreviation: Sr. Mrs. Señora – Abreviation: Sra. Ms. Señorita- Abreviation: Srta. Finally: never mix formal and informal covnersations.
