Luke 9:1-6 Jesus summoned the twelve and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases, and he sent them to proclaim the Kingdom of God and to heal the sick.

He said to them, “Take nothing for the journey, neither walking stick, nor sack, nor food, nor money, and let no one take a second tunic. Whatever house you enter, stay there and leave from there. And as for those who do not welcome you, when you leave that town, shake the dust from your feet in testimony against them!”

Then they set out and went from village to village proclaiming the good news and curing diseases everywhere. Gospel of the Lord

Reflections on Luke 9: Reflexiónes en Lucas 9: by Fr. Sam Rosales, S.J. Sept. 26, 2007 There are four marks of the true Church established by the Lord Jesus Christ. It has to be one, holy, Catholic, and Apostolic. Today we see why it is Apostolic. The twelve Apostles were summoned by the Lord and commissioned. They were given authority and power over the demons, and the gift of healing diseases.

The implications of this act are enormous. It means that Jesus had decided he was not going to establish the kingdom all by himself. He was not going to “Lord it over the flock”. Rather He was to be a servant of all in the kingdom. And he was to share that service with those who answered his call, the Apostles first.

They were to share his intimate knowledge of the Father. He was to begin sharing secrets given only to those the Father had chosen. In Luke Jesus rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said: “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for you have hidden these things from the wise and the understanding and revealed them to babes; yes Father, such was your gracious will.”

St. John Chrysostom notes that “Jesus at the beginning had only eleven men to start with, men who were undistinguished, without learning, ill-informed, destitute, poorly clad, without weapons, or sandals, men who had but a single tunic to wear” (Demonstrations Against the Pagans 1.7). And yet Jesus succeeded in establishing his Kingdom without any force of arms, or expenditure of money, nor by making wars of conquest, nor inflaming men to battle. He is the King of Peace.

No eran distinguidos. No eran educados. No sabían mucho.

Jesus knew that the battle was a deeply spiritual one. Later St. Paul was to say: “We are not contending against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world rulers of this present darkness, against the spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places” (Ephesians 6.12).

These were the names of the evil spirits the Apostles cast out. In order to be prepared, we are to “take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And we are to pray at all times in the Spirit, keeping alert with all perseverance” (verse 18).

The Apostles were to go in haste (as in harvest time), with a sense of urgency. They were not to carry superfluous equipment, and they were to rely on hospitality. C.B. Caird, in his book St. Luke, says that it was the practice among strict Jews, on leaving Gentile soil, to shake from their feet the dust of Gentile pollution: the disciples are bidden to adopt this symbolic act as a declaration that those who will not accept God’s Kingdom no longer belong to his people.

There was a sense of urgency because Jesus knew his enemies were out to kill him. This was serious business. John the Baptist was already in prison when he sent word: ‘Are you he who is to come, or shall we look for another?’ In that hour he cured many of diseases and plagues and evil spirits.

Jesus answered them, “Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the poor have good news preached to them” (Luke ). Thereafter John the Baptist was beheaded.

Jesus died and rose from the dead. And he is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13.8)! What he did in his public life on earth before he died, he continues to do now that he is risen. “He is the head of his Body, the Church” (Colossians 1.18). The Bishops succeeded the Apostles. And we must still continue to pray, and pray much. The spiritual battle between the sons of darkness and the sons of light continues. With Jesus as our Head, the victory belongs to him and to those who belong to him.
