Reflections on Matthew 1:18 - 24 Reflexiónes en Mateo 1:18 - 24 by Fr. Sam Rosales, S.J. Dec. 22, 2013 This is the Fourth Sunday of Advent. We will examine the readings for today. They are rather profound and rich in meaning for all Christians. May the Holy Spirit help you make some applications, and may they make a big difference in your lives.

Este es el Cuarto Domingo de Adviento Este es el Cuarto Domingo de Adviento. Examinaremos las lecturas de la Misa de hoy. Son algo profundas y ricas con mucho sentido para todos los Cristianos. Que el Espíritu Santo los ayude hacer algunas aplicaciones, y que hagan una gran diferencia en sus vidas.

In a beautiful way, the Church prays in the Entrance Antiphon for our Eucharist: “Let the clouds rain down the Just One, and the earth bring forth a Savior” (Isaiah 45:8). Everybody knows how beautiful it feels when it rains softly, and immediately the desert blooms all kinds of beautiful flowers.

De bella manera, la Iglesia ora con la Antífona de Entrada para nuestra Eucaristía: “Destilen, cielos, el rocío, y que las nubes lluevan al Justo; que la tierra se abra y haga germinar al Salvador” (Isaías 45:8). The first reading from Isaiah 7:10-14 shows that God told the bad king Ahaz to ask for a sign, and he refused to obey, because he was a worshiper of idols, and did not want to exalt the Lord. The Hebrew expression “I will not tempt the Lord” can also be read “I will not exalt the Lord.”

Nonetheless Isaiah spoke to the house of David: “The Lord himself will give you this sign: the virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall name him Emmanuel” (Isaiah 7:14).

In the second reading from Romans 1:1-7, Paul remind us that Jesus, the Son of God, fulfilled this prophecy when he was descended from David, according to the flesh. Note the angel of the Lord addressed Joseph as “son of David” (Matthew 1:20-23), and reminds him what Isaiah had said long ago, that “the virgin would conceive, and bear a son, and he would be called Emmanuel (which means: ‘God with us’)”.

He was always prompt and diligent in his obedience. “He awoke, and did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him, and took his wife into his home” (Matthew 1:24). In this way he accepted the mystery of her motherhood.

In the Palestine of the time of the birth of Jesus, the normal Jewish procedure for marriage took three steps. First there was the engagement. This could happen even when those engaged were only children. It was usually made by the parents, or through a professional matchmaker.

During that year the couple were known as man and wife, although they had not the rights of man and wife. It could not be terminated in any other way than by divorce. It was at this stage that Joseph and Mary were at. If Joseph wished to end the betrothal, he could do so by divorcing his wife.

It was at this stage that the angel told Joseph, Mary was to bear a child, and that that child had been begotten by the Holy Spirit. (cf. He must have been a man of deep prayer, to be chosen for such a special job. Now I understand why he appeared with Our Lady at Fatima. He is still the protector of the Holy Family.

Tomo un brinco de fe por la parte de San José para aceptar el mensaje del ángel. En esto se ve su grandeza, y su santidad. Él tiene que haber sido un hombre de oración profunda, para haber sido escogido para esta tarea tan especial. Ahora entiendo porque él se apareció con Nuestra Señora de Fátima. Todavía sigue siendo el protector de la Sagrada Familia.

Note that the Holy Father, Pope Francis, has declared that St Note that the Holy Father, Pope Francis, has declared that St. Joseph be mentioned in all the Eucharistic Prayers. This because now his family is the entire Church, the mystical body of Christ. He watches over and protects it. Let us pray for his intercession!
