Hi my name is Juan Martinez. I’m seven years old. I’m from Madrid, Spain. Today is my favorite day of the year. It is December 24 th, which is Christmas Eve. We began our day with Posada. Now I’m having dinner with my family. Later my family and I are going to mass at midnight to celebrate the birth of Jesus. Hola me llamo Juan Martínez. Tengo siete años. Soy de Madrid, España. Hoy es mi día favorita del año. Es el 24 de diciembre, que es la noche buena. Empezamos nuestro día con la posada. Ahora ceno con mi familia. Luego mi familia y yo iremos a la misa de noche buena, que es a la medianoche, para celebrar el nacimiento de Jesús.

Before Christmas Eve, we began our celebration nine days ago on December 16 th with Posadas. Posadas are an enactment of looking for a place for St. Joseph and the Virgin Mary to stay. Every night for nine nights, including on Christmas Eve, one family in our neighborhood holds the Posada at their home. Each of these homes has a Nativity scene at their house. Antes de la noche buena empezamos nuestra celebración, hace nueve días, el 16 de diciembre con las posadas. Las posadas son unas actuaciones sobre la búsqueda de un sitio para el San José y la Virgen María para dormir. Cada noche por nueve noches incluyendo la noche buena, una familia en nuestro barrio tiene la posada en su casa. En cada casa hay un nacimiento.

The hosts of the home are called the innkeepers, and our neighborhood children and adults are called los peregrinos, who have to ask for a place to stay. In the attempt to find lodging, everybody carries small lit candles in their hands. Four teenagers carry two statues of St. Joseph, which then is followed by the Virgin Mary riding a donkey. We have to ask three different homes for lodging, but only the third home accepts us. Los anfitriones representan a los hosteleros, y los niños y los adultos del barrio representan los peregrions. Los peregrions pedirán sitio para dormir. Mientras buscan la posada, todos llevan en sus manos pequeñas velitas encendidas. Once we find lodging, we kneel around their Nativity scene and pray the Rosary. After praying, we have a party for me and the other children in the neighborhood, in which we get to break a piñata that’s filled with peanuts, oranges, tangerines and sugar canes. While we break our piñata, the adults drink punch made out of seasonal fruits and cinnamon sticks, with a little bid of alcohol in it. We celebrate nine Posadas up through Christmas Eve. Después de encontrar la posada, nos arrodillamos alrededor del nacimiento y rezamos el rosario. Después de todos estos rezos, tenemos una fiesta para los niños del barrio y yo. Rompemos la piñata, que está llena de cacahuates, naranjas, mandarinas y cañas de azúcar. Mientras rompemos nuestras piñatas, los adultos toman frutas de la estación con trozos de canela y con poco de aguardiente. Celebramos nueve posadas por noche buena.

Tonight, on the ninth Posada, we finally put baby Jesus back in the manger in the Nativity scene. Tonight we don’t get presents because Christmas is for celebrating the Life of Our Savior. Esta noche, en la novena posada, ponemos al niño Jesús en el pesebre en el nacimiento. Esta noche no recibimos nuestro regalo porque la navidad es la celebración del nacimiento de Nuestro Salvador.

Next week we celebrate New Years. On New Year’s Eve we have a mass at midnight. This mass is called Rooster’s Mass, in which we will give thanks for all the blessings we received during the year. La semana próxima celebraremos año nuevo. En la noche vieja tendremos misa a medianoche. Esta misa es llamada la misa del gallo, en que daremos gracias por todas las bendiciones que hemos recibido durante el año.

I’m excited for is January 6 th, which is the day of the Kings. On this day all the children and I will receive presents! Later on that day my family and I will share hot chocolate and the “Rosca de Reyes,” which is a traditional wreath-shaped bread. Inside of the bread is a small figurine of baby Jesus. The person who gets the baby Jesus gets to be his godparent until the celebration of Candelario, on February 2 nd. Estoy emocionado para el 6 de enero, que es el día de los Reyes. ¡En este día todos los niños y yo recibiremos los regalos! Más tarde ese día mi familia y yo compartiremos chocolate caliente y la "Rosca de Reyes," que es un pan formado como la guirnalda tradicional. Dentro del pan es una figurilla pequeña del niño Jesús. La persona que recibe el niño Jesús será su padrino hasta la celebración del candelario, el 2 de febrero.

The day of the calendar is the day of candle or light, know as the Day of Purification. On this day my family and all other Hispanic families will put away the Nativity scene. Also the godparent of baby Jesus will hold a dinner party. It will be the end of all the celebrations. El día del calendario es el día de la luz, el Día de la Purificación. En este día mi familia y todas las otras familias hispanas guardarán el belén. También el padrino de niño Jesús tendrá una cena fiesta. Será el fin de todas las celebraciones.
