Lucas 1:1-4, 4: :1 Muchos han tratado de escribir la historia de las cosas que pasaron, entre nosotros, 1:2 tal y como nos las trasmitieron los que las vieron desde el principio y que ayudaron en la predicación.

1:3 Yo también, ilustre Teófilo, después de haberme informado minuciosamente de todo, desde sus principios, pensé escribírtelo por orden, 1:4 para que veas la verdad de lo que se te ha enseñado. 4:14 (Después de que Jesús fue tentado por el demonio en el desierto); impulsado por el Espíritu, volvió a Galilea. 4:15 Iba enseñando en las sinagogas; todos lo alababan y su fama se extendió por toda la región.

4:16 Fue también a Nazaret, donde se había criado. Luke 1:1-4, 4: :1 Since many have undertaken to compile a narrative of the events that have been fulfilled among us, 1:2 just as those who were eyewitnesses from the beginning and ministers of the word have handed them down to us,

1:3 I too have decided, after investigating everything accurately anew, to write it down in an orderly sequence for you, most excellent Theophilus, 1:4 so that you may realize the certainty of the teachings you have received. 4:14 Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news of him spread throughout the whole region.

4:15 He taught in their synagogues and was praised by all. 16 He came to Nazareth, where he had grown up, and went according to his custom into the synagogue on the Sabbath day. He stood up to read 17 and was handed a scroll of the prophet Isaiah. He unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it was written:

18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, 19 and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord.” 20 Rolling up the scroll, he handed it back to the attendant and sat down, and the eyes of all in the synagogue looked intently at him.

21 He said to them, “Today this scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.” Gospel of the Lord

Let us see how the reading from Nehemiah and From St. Paul affects our lives. The Gospel for today sets the stage for Jesus to enter into his public life, and into our lives, as one who fulfilled prophecies about the Messiah.

Hoy es el Tercer Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario. Vamos a ver como las lecturas de Nehemias y la de San Pablo afectan nuestras vidas hoy en día. El Evangelio de hoy establece el escenario para que Jesús entre a su vida publica y a nuestras vidas, cumpliendo las profecías acerca del Mesías.

Whenever I read Nehemiah 8:1-6, 8-10 I realize our liturgical traditions regarding worship go all the way back to Nehemiah. Note that the religious practices of our church are similar. We have a priest presiding at Mass, who reads and interprets the Word of God. We have an altar for the sacrifice. We stand when the Gospels are read.

Cuando leo Nehemias 8:1-6, 8-10 me doy cuenta que muchas de nuestras tradiciones litúrgicas llegan hasta esa lectura. Noten que las practicas religiosas de nuestra iglesia son semejantes. Tenemos un sacerdote que preside en la Misa. Este lee y interpreta la Palabra de Dios para el pueblo. Igualmente, nos ponemos de pie cuando se lee el Evangelio.

The assembly consists of men, women and children. (This is not the case in the religion of Islam, for example, where only the men enter the main part of the mosque). The people in our Church also say “Amen” right before the Our Father, to all that the priest has read.

La asamblea también consiste de hombres, mujeres y niños. (Esto no es el caso con la religión de Islam, donde solo los hombres son permitidos entrar a la parte principal de la mezquita, el templo de los musulmanes). Durante la Misa la gente también dice “Amen” a todo lo que el sacerdote ha dicho. Esto sucede inmediatamente antes del Padre Nuestro.

The big difference from the time of Nehemiah to the Catholic Church today is that we believe that the risen Christ is the High Priest, and is present at every Mass on the face of the earth. The Book of Hebrews is all about how the priesthood of Jesus is higher than the priesthood of the Old Testament. “Jesus has appeared once for all at the end of the age to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.

La diferencia mayor es que Cristo Jesús resucitado está presente en cada Misa no le hace donde sea sobre la tierra. En el Libro de Hebreos se explica como el sacerdocio de Jesucristo es mas alto que el sacerdocio del Antiguo Testamento. “Jesús apareció una vez y para siempre en la consumación de los siglos, se presento una vez para siempre por el sacrificio de sí mismo para quitar de en medio el pecado.

Just as it is appointed for men to die but once, and after that comes judgment, so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly awaiting for him” (Hebrews 9:26-28). Note that Christ transcends time and space, because he is God.

Y de la manera que esta establecido para los hombres que mueran una sola vez, y después de esto el juicio, así también Cristo fue ofrecido una sola vez para llevar los pecados de muchos; a aparecerá por segunda vez, sin relación con el pecado, para salvar a los que lo esperan” (Hebreos 9:26-28). The reading from St. Paul (Corinthians 12:12-30) reminds us that Christ is community. Every one who is baptized is part of the Body of Christ: male or female, slave or free. When members of the Body of Christ hurt in Haiti, where the earthquakes occurred, everyone hurts. Therefore, we all pitch in to try to help them as best we can. Each one has a different role to play, as each one is encouraged to exercise his or her gifts, as the Lord has provided. No one is a clone of anyone else. Each is unique, and loved by God.

La lectura de San Pablo (Corintios 12:12-30) nos recuerda que Cristo es comunidad. Todo aquel que se ha bautizado es parte del Cuerpo de Cristo: hombre o mujer, esclavo o libre. Cuando duelen los miembros del Cuerpo de Cristo en Haití (donde ocurrió el temblor), todo mundo duele. De manera que todos hacemos nuestra parte para ayudarlos en su necesidad tanto como podemos. Cada uno tiene diferente papel, y cada uno es animado a ejercer su don como Dios lo ha proveído. Nadie es un duplicado de otro. Cada uno es único y especial en los ojos de nuestro Padre Dios.

In the Gospel Jesus was given the reading from Isaiah 61. He was consciously aware of the influence of the Spirit of the Lord upon him. He was to bring good news to the poor, the prisoners, the blind, and the downtrodden of his day. By saying he was “anointed,” He is thought to be presented here as the Messiah. The “year of favor” means that the period of Jesus would be one of favor and deliverance. (So says: Joseph A. Fitzmeyer, The Gospel According to Luke I-IX,, Doubleday, The Anchor Bible, p. 533).

En el evangelio, Jesús lee del capitulo 61 de Isaías, que se le dio. Él estaba consciente de la influencia del Espirito Santo sobre Él. When John the Baptist was about to die, he sent his disciples to Jesus, asking: “Are you he who is to come, or are we to look for another? In that hour he cured many of diseases and plagues and evil spirits, and on many that were blind he bestowed sight. In addition, he said: ‘Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the poor have the good news preached to them’ ” (Luke 7:20-22).

Cuando Juan Bautista estaba por morir. Mando a sus discípulos a Jesús, preguntando; “¿Eres tú el que ha de venir, o hemos de buscar a otro? En aquella hora Jesús curo a muchos de sus enfermedades y plagas y demonios. Y muchos de los ciegos recibieron su vista. Y Jesús les dijo: ‘Vayan y díganle a Juan cuanto han visto y oído: los ciegos ven, los cojos andan, los leprosos son limpiados, los sordos oyen, los muertos son levantados de la muerte, y a los pobres se les anuncia la buena nueva’ ” (Lucas 7:20-22).

All of these things fulfilled Luke Chapter 4, which we read this Sunday. Jesus Christ, our risen Lord and Savior, is the same “yesterday, today, and forever ” (Hebrews 13:8), and continues to do the same. Perhaps we need to work on awareness. Pray for, the grace to notice what the Lord is doing. Then give him thanks, honor, praise, glory and power, forever and ever. Amen!

En todos estos acontecimientos se cumplió lo que esta en Lucas capitulo cuatro, que leímos este domingo. Y Cristo Jesús, nuestro Señor resucitado, es el mismo “ayer, ahora, y para siempre” (Hebreos 13:8). Sigue haciendo lo mismo. Quizá necesitamos hacer la lucha de estar alertas a su presencia. Oremos que en verdad notemos lo tanto que el Señor hace por nosotros diariamente. ¡A Él se le da gracias, poder, honor, alabanza, y toda la gloria para siempre! ¡Amen!
