How to tell time in Spanish
To ask what time it is use: ¿Qué hora es?
To give the time for every hour except one o’clock use: Son las + hour. Son las cinco y cinco 5:05
To say it is one o’clock use: Es la una.
Think of the clock as a pizza… …divided in half (straight up and down).
For times on the right side of the clock… you add (y + the minutes to the hour) Examples: 12:10 Son las doce y diez. 5:20 Son las cinco y veinte. 9:05 Son las nueve y cinco

For times on the left side of the clock… 1. you round up to the next hour 2. You add menos + minutes to indicate the number of minutes until the hour. … Examples: 8:55 Son las nueve menos cinco 12:50 Es la una menos diez

*Remember to use “es” instead of “son” for one o’clock. Examples: 1:00 Es la una. 1:20 Es la una y veinte. 12:48 Es la una menos doce.
*Use “cuarto” for the quarter of an hour. Use media for half an hour. Examples: 7:15 Son las siete y cuarto. 4:45 Son las cinco menos cuarto. 1:30. Es la una y media.
Also… **Use de la mañana for in the morning. Use de la tarde for in the afternoon. Use de la noche for at night.
Also…. We use the phrase “ y media” for half past We use the phrase “y cuarto” for a quarter past (15 min)
