Can you guess…?  Here are some irregular preterite forms. Can you guess what the present verb form might be?  yo vine  él estuvo  nosotros trajimos  ellos fueron

Cómo te salió? ¿Cómo te salió?  vine > vengo  estuvo > está  trajimos > traemos  fueron > van / son  Some irregular preterite forms resemble their present forms, while others do not.

Bases  How do you learn the irregulars?  Learn them by base forms first. Start with these five:  estar > estuv-  tener > tuv-  venir > vin-  poder > pud-  saber > sup-

Okay, now what?  estar > estuv- –yo estuve –tú estuviste –él estuvo –nosotros estuvimos –vosotros estuvisteis –ellos estuvieron  Hey, no accent marks!

Try one yourself!  tener > tuv- –yo tuv___ –tú tuv___ –él tuv___ –nosotros tuv___ –vosotros tuv___ –ellos tuv___

How ’ d you do? ttener > tuv- –y–yo tuve –t–tú tuviste –é–él tuvo –n–nosotros tuvimos –v–vosotros tuvisteis –e–ellos tuvieron

Here ’ s another for good measure.  venir > vin- –yo vin___ –tú vin___ –él vin___ –nosotros vin___ –ellos vin___

How ’ d you do? vvenir > vin- –y–yo vine –t–tú viniste –é–él vino –n–nosotros vinimos –v–vosotros vinisteis –e–ellos vinieron

Two more ending in –S-  Here are two more irregular preterite forms that both happen to end in –s.  poner > pus-  querer > quis-  Any guesses as to what their forms are?

Muy bien!  poner > pus- –yo puse –tú pusiste –él puso –nosotros pusimos –vosotros pusisteis –ellos pusieron  querer > quis- –yo quise –tú quisiste –él quiso –nosotros quisimos –vosotros quisisteis –ellos quisieron

Two more ending in –J-  Two more irregular preterite forms that happen to end in –j.  traer > traj-  decir > dij-

Why are these special?  traer > traj- –yo traje, tú trajiste, él trajo, nosotros trajimos –**ellos trajeron**  decir > dij- –yo dije, tú dijiste, él dijo, nosotros dijimos –**ellos dijeron**  The ending for the ellos form is –eron (without the –i-)

Hacer  hacer > hic- –yo hice –tú hiciste –**él hizo** –nosotros hicimos –ellos hicieron  It ’ s like the other irregular preterites, except it makes a spelling change in the élél form: –hic- > hiz-

How about a two-for-one?  ser > fu- = ir > fu- –yo fui –tú fuiste –él fue –nosotros fuimos –vosotros fuisteis –ellos fueron  It ’ s the same form for both verbs, and the endings are not identical to the other irregular preterite verbs.

Two “ kind of ” irregulars  dar > d- / ver > v- –yo di / yo vi –tú diste / tú viste –él dio / él vio –nosotros dimos / vimos –vosotros disteis / visteis –ellos dieron / vieron  We saw ver in the previous presentation; dar works in the same way, even though it ’ s an – ar verb.

Wow! That ’ s a lot to digest!  Yes, it is. So let ’ s practice.

El fin de semana  Oye, Teresa, ¿qué [tú] _______ (hacer) este fin de semana pasado?  Mi hermana y yo _______ (ir) al centro.  ¿Por qué _______ (ir) ustedes allí?  ________ (querer) ver una película. ________ (ver) la nueva con Sean Connery.

El fin de semana  Oye, Teresa, ¿qué hiciste este fin de semana pasado?  Mi hermana y yo fuimos al centro.  ¿Por qué fueron ustedes allí?  Quisimos ver una película. Vimos la nueva con Sean Connery.

Una visita al médico  Hola, Juan! ¿Dónde [tú] ______ (estar) ayer? Yo no te _____ (ver) en la clase de contabilidad.  Yo no _____ (poder) venir a clase porque ______ (tener) una fiebre [fever] y _____ (ir) al médico. Él me ______ (poner) una inyección y me _______ (dar) una receta [prescription]. Después yo _____ (venir) a la escuela, pero ______ (llegar) muy tarde y no _______ (poder) entrar en la clase.

Una visita al médico  Hola, Juan! ¿Dónde estuviste ayer? Yo no te vi en la clase de contabilidad.  Yo no pude venir a clase porque tuve una fiebre y fui al médico. Él me puso una inyección y me dio una receta. Después yo vine a la escuela, pero llegué muy tarde y no pude entrar en la clase.

La fiesta  Ayer mi familia y yo ______ (tener) una fiesta especial para mi abuela. Él ______ (cumplir) los 80 años, y muchos familiares [relatives] ______ (venir) a la fiesta y le ______ (traer) regalos bonitos. Todos le ______ (decir), “ Felicidades ” y le _____ (dar) abrazos [hugs].

La fiesta  Ayer mi familia y yo tuvimos una fiesta especial para mi abuela. Él cumplió los 80 años, y muchos familiares vinieron a la fiesta y le trajeron regalos bonitos. Todos le dijeron, “ Felicidades ” y le dieron abrazos.
