Special meanings in the Preterite Tener-to (like a baby) Ella una carta ayer. Estar-to a la escuela a las 8:00. Conocer-to Mario a Susana.-Mario met Susana (for the first time).

Special meanings (continued) Poder-to be able to do something & succeed or fail (action has been completed—there is follow through) Ana no pudo entrar la clase. (Ana failed to enter the class—she tried and couldn’t do it.) Querer-to want something AND to do it or refuse it (follow through and action) Ella quiso ir a Homecoming con el caballero (She wanted to go with him—and she DID.) Pero él no quiso ir con ella. (But he refused to go with her—so he DIDN’T.)

Special meanings (continued) Saber- Ella supo las respuestas de la prueba ayer. (She found out the answers to the quiz yesterday.)
