Irregular Preterite Verbs IR/SER

Also known as the ‘FU’ Verbs. Why is this?? Also known as the ‘FU’ Verbs.

In the preterite, ser and ir have the same forms…. FU VERBS IR SER (Yo) FUI (Nosotros) FUIMOS (Tú) FUISTE (Vosotros) FUISTEIS (Él/ Ella/ Usted) FUE (Ellos/ Ellas/ Ustedes) FUERON (Yo) FUI (Nosotros) FUIMOS (Tú) FUISTE (Vosotros) FUISTEIS (Él/ Ella/ Usted) FUE (Ellos/ Ellas/ Ustedes) FUERON

IR vs. SER Even though they have the same conjugation, they have two COMPLETELY different meanings. IR  WENT El hombre fue al supermercado. The man went to the supermarket. SER  WAS Después de la reaccion, fue un elemento nuevo. After the reaction, it was a new element. FU VERBS

FU VERBS Helpful hints… ** IR and SER don’t have accent marks! Yay!  ** To remember the subjects of fui and fue… FUI is for the yo form, FUE is for él, ella, ud. ** And easy way to tell the difference as to whether the verb is Ser or Ir… Ir is almost always followed with “a” or “al”.
