Ser describes characteristics. Sr. Burroughs es pelón. Sr. Dilbeck es guapo. Los Lakers son mendigos. Tú eres baboso. These characteristics are not going to change any time soon.

Ser also describes professions: Matt es abogado. Mis hermanos son carpinteros. Michael Jackson es cantante. Yo soy Batman. Note that in Spanish we do not use the indefinite article between ser and a profession. Mi papá es médico. My father is physician. (Not my father is a physician)
