This is just one of the ways that the past tense can be expressed. Once students master this regular conjugation, I would introduce the irregulars. After mastering that, I would continue by explaining the regular forms of the other past tense, the imperfect. From there I would discuss the irregulars. I would be sure to emphasize not only the conjugations of these tenses but also when to use each of them.
