Verbs ending in –car, -gar, and –zar have spelling changes in the preterite to preserve their respective sounds.

In the preterite, verbs ending in -car change their « c » to a « qu » in the yo form. Ejemplo: Buscar Presente: Yo busco el libro Preterite:Yo busqué el libro. This is to preserve the [hard C] sound

In the preterite, verbs ending in -gar change their « g » to a « gu » in the yo form. Ejemplo: Jugar Presente: Yo juego con mis amigos Preterite:Yo jugué con mis amigos This is to preserve the [hard G] sound
