Titles of Respect If a person has a title of respect, always use “usted” when talking to them. Usted is the formal way of saying “you”. “¿Cómo está usted?” is considered formal speak; respectful. “¿Cómo estás?” is more informal. “¿Qué tal?” is for people you’re friends with.
