Saber versus Conocer

La diferencia entre los dos… Saber: to know a fact, to know something thoroughly, to know how to do something. Conocer: to be acquainted with a person, place, or thing.

Regla 1 To express knowledge or ignorance of a fact or information about something, use "saber. Juan no sabe mi nombre. Marta sabe quien robó el banco. Yo no sé cómo funciona esta fotocopiadora.

Regla 2 To say that one is or is not acquainted or familiar with a person, a place, or an object, use conocer. No conozco este canal muy bien. Conocemos esta reportera de las noticias. El no conoce Bogotá muy bien.

Regla 3 To express knowledge or ignorance of a subject or learning discipline, use saber or conocer, depending upon the context. El redactor no sabe muy bien las matmáticas. El periodista conoce las técnicas de escribir.

Regla 4 To express knowledge or ignorance of a skill, or how to do something, use saber + infinitive. Ella sabe bailar muy bien. Sabéis tocar los instrumentos muy bien. Sois un grupo talentoso.

Regla 5 To say that you know something by heart, use saber. Yo sé esta letra de canción mejor que tú. Tú sabes donde vivo.

Práctica… Juan sabe / conoce donde está María. Juan sabe donde está María. No conozco / sé su número de teléfono. No sé su número de teléfono. These statements express knowledge or ignorance of a fact or information: REGLA 1!!!

Práctica… Yo no sé / conozco a Isabel. Yo no conozco a Isabel. Rafa y Alfredo saben / conocen Madrid. Rafa y Alfredo conocen Madrid. All these statements indicate that one is or is not acquainted with a person, a place, or an object: REGLA 2!!!

Práctica… Juan no conoce / sabe el chino. Ella conoce / sabe matemáticas. All these statements express knowledge or ignorance of a subject or learning discipline, which means you can use saber or conocer, depending on the context: REGLA 3!!!

Práctica… Gustavo sabe / conoce donde vive. Gustavo sabe donde vive. This statement indicates that one knows something by heart: REGLA 4!!!
