El Futuro & El Condicional Avancemos 3 – Unidad 3 Lección 1

El Futuro We have already learned how to refer to future events by using the formula “ir + a + infinitive”. Spanish verbs can also be conjugated in the future tense. The future tense translates to “will…” in English.

El Futuro The future tense conjugation is different than all of the other conjugations you have learned because you add the ending directly onto the infinitive (you don’t remove the ending). Additionally, there is only one set of endings (you use the same endings for ar/er/ir verbs).

El Futuro -é -ás -á -emos -án Here are the endings for the future tense Remember the endings attach to the infinitive of the verb -é -ás -á -emos -án

Jugar – El Futuro Yo jugaré – I will play Tú jugarás – You will play Él/ella/usted jugará He/she/you will play Nosotros jugaremos We will play Ellos/ellas/ustedes jugarán They/you all will play

Proteger – El Futuro Yo protegeré – I will protect Tú protegerás – You will protect Él/ella/usted protegerá He/she/you will protect Nosotros protegeremos We will protect Ellos/ellas/ustedes protegerán They/you all will protect

Traducir – El Futuro Yo traduciré – I will translate Tú traducirás – You will translate Él/ella/usted traducirá He/she/you will translate Nosotros traduciremos We will translate Ellos/ellas/ustedes traducirán They/you all will translate

Verbos Irregulares Some verbs are irregular in the future tense. You must change the stem before adding the appropriate future ending.

El Futuro - Los Irregulares (Please memorize) Infinitive Stem Decir Haber Hacer Poder Poner Querer Saber Salir Tener Venir Dir- Habr- Har- Podr- Pondr- Querr- Sabr- Saldr- Tendr- Vendr-

Los irregulares – El Futuro I will put the pot in the tent. Yo pondré la olla en la tienda de campaña. What will our parents say? ¿Qué dirán nuestros padres? You will make a cake tomorrow. Harás un pastel mañana.

El Futuro You can also use the future tense to wonder or to make a guess about something. Example: ¿Qué hará Carlos hoy? – I wonder what Carlos is doing today? Jugará al tenis con Emiliano. – He’s probably playing tennis with Emiliano.

El Condicional

El Condicional To say what someone would or wouldn’t do, you use the conditional tense. I would bring a blanket. They wouldn’t resolve the problem.

El Condicional Like the future tense, you will attach the verb endings to the infinitive of the verb. Additionally, there is only 1 set of endings for “ar”/”er”/”ir” verbs. They are the same endings as the “er”/”ir” imperfect endings.

The Conditional Endings Here are the conditional endings Remember – they attach to the infinitive of the verb -ía -ías -íamos -ían

Llevar – El Condicional Yo llevaría – I would carry Tú llevarías – You would carry Él/ella/usted llevaría He/she/you would carry Nosotros llevaríamos We would carry Ellos/ellas/ustedes llevarían They/you all would carry
