Question Words

¿Cómo estás? How are you? ¿De dónde eres? Where are you from? ¿Quién eres? Who are you? We are already familiar with several words used for asking information questions:

These are all the question forms:  ¿Qué?  ¿Quién?  ¿Cuál?  ¿Cómo?  ¿Cuándo?  ¿Cuánto?  ¿Dónde?  ¿Por qué?  Porque Remember that in Spanish the same word is used for ‘Why’ and ‘Because’.

What do they mean? ¿Qué? ¿Quién? ¿Quiénes? ¿Cuál? ¿Cuáles? ¿Cómo? ¿Cuándo? ¿Cuánto/a? ¿Cuántos/as? ¿Dónde? ¿Por qué? Porque  What?  Who?  Which one?  Which ones?  How?  When?  How much?  How many?  Where?  Why?  Because

Let’s see some examples ¿Qué es esto? What is this? ¿Quién es de Chile? Who’s from Chile? ¿Quiénes son ellos? Who are they? Remember: Quien is singular/ Quienes is plural.

More examples… Don’t forget! Cual is only for one. Cuáles is for more than one. ¿Cuál es tu mochila? Which (one) is your backpack? ¿Cuáles son tus libros? Which (ones) are your books?

Some more… ¿Cuánta tarea hay en la clase de español? How much homework is there in Spanish class? ¿Cuántos estudiantes hay en la clase? How many students are in the class? Pay Attention: Cuanto is maculine / Cuanta is feminine Add “s” for plural forms.

And even more… ¿Cuándo es el concierto de rock? When is the rock concert? ¿Dónde están mis llaves? Where are my keys?  A:¿Por qué estudias hoy? Why are you studying today?  B: Estudio porque tengo un examen. I am studying because I have a test.

How to ask other questions?  There are several ways to ask a question in Spanish besides using question words.  One way is to simply place the subject after the verb.  Don’t forget to change the inflection of your voice: Carlos esta en la oficina. S V ¿ Esta Carlos en la oficina? V S

Questions, Questions, Questions. Hay una fiesta en el colegio mañana.  Sometimes the written question marks and the change in the tone of voice alone indicates the difference between a statement and a question: ¿Hay una fiesta en el colegio mañana? This is very important: The opening question mark is fundamental in Spanish. You must always include it!

When answering questions, pay attention to the pronoun form. The pronoun form in the answer will be based on the question. Questions & Answers. If the question is asked of you, the answer is in the I form. If the question asks in the he form, then the answer is also in the he form. Example: ¿Cómo estás? (“tu” form) Estoy muy bien. (“yo” form)

Answer Question Tú/Ud. él / ella/ Ud. Ustedes/Vosotros Ellos/ellas/Uds. Yo Nosotros Yo él / ella/ Ud. Ustedes/Vosotros Ellos/ellas/Uds. Tú/Ud. Nosotros

 Sometimes you can add a tag word such as ¿no? or ¿verdad? to the end of a sentence.  This will have the same effect as saying right?, or using a question tag. Hay una fiesta en el colegio hoy, ¿verdad? There is a party at school today, right? Pedro está enfermo, ¿no? Pedro is sick, isn’t he?
