1 P.S. 204 3 rd Grade News October/November 2015 During the month of September and October, our third graders learned how to choose “just right” books and also learned to read the books like they are gold! We treat our books with care and read with expression. A major focus of the third grade-reading curriculum is using evidence from text to explain answers and opinions. You can help your child by always asking, “Why do you feel that way?” or “How do you know?” It is extremely important that your child reads a “just right” book at home every day for at least 30 minutes. Please assist your child with choosing a quiet location to read, helping him/her set a timer and staying focused. After reading, you can help make sure your child understood what s/he read by asking questions like: Can you tell me in your own words what happened in your book? What was the most important thing you learned while you were reading? What was the problem in the story and how was it solved? Who was your favorite character and what did she/he do, say or think that made you like him/her? Our third graders were very excited about decorating their very own ‘Writers Notebook”. We are building our stamina in writing with the help of Simone from Teachers College. Students have brainstormed about important people and places in their lives. They are in the process of choosing one of their entries and writing a Personal Narrative. We are looking forward to celebrating our published writing by having a “Writing Celebration”. We will keep you posted! We started off the year by reviewing our addition and subtraction facts. Students are adding and subtracting 3 digit numbers. The focus is on our base 10 system. We are also working on rounding our numbers to help understand place value. The shift this year is having our third graders being able to solve multi -step word problems. We use the CUBES strategy to solve word problems. Please encourage your child to use this strategy when solving word problems at home. Students will be working on throwing and catching activities, then learning football skills. Please make sure that your child wears sneakers on the day that he/she has gym. Appropriate footwear is important in maintaining a safe physical education environment. Third grade musicians have begun piano lessons! We continue to learn about hand position, playing along with the beat and changing from note to note. Each week, we will learn fun, short songs that help us practice our techniques. For the next few months, our third graders will be using the FOSS Measurement Module which consists of four investigations, each designed to emphasize a particular type of metric measurement: length, mass, temperature, and volume. Students will learn how to use the appropriate tools to figure out appropriate methods of measurement. You can have your child help you follow a recipe when you are cooking and baking. This will help him/her to become more familiar with how things are measured. READING Writing MATH Science Physical Education Music

2 Happy October Library Learners & Parents:) Students in First grade through Fifth grade have been utilizing our library for a few weeks now. We’ve listened to some ENTERTAINING & INTERESTING stories on starting the school year, kindness, helpfulness, & choosing Just Right Books. There is a book in this AMAZING library for every single reader!!! Talk to your child about his or her interests, topics, or subjects they like to read about. If children choose books based on their interest, they will actually want to read!! Your child is able to search for books that are in our library on Destiny. Go to www.PS204.org, click on the student tab, scroll down to library. The library page will open. On the right hand side of the page, there is a link to Destiny. In the FIND bar, type in a subject (example: friendship) or a topic (example: natural disasters) and a list of books that are available will be shown. Click on a title that sounds interesting...read the BOOK BLURB….if it sounds entertaining and interesting, write down the title and the author’s last name. On library day, your child and I will locate the book and make sure it’s JUST RIGHT. Ask your child to explain what a JUST RIGHT book looks like and sounds like. STAY TUNED!!!!!! The BOOK FAIR is back during the week of Parent Teacher Conferences. Students will shop with their classes during the school week, in addition to having the opportunity to shop for great Scholastic books in the cafeteria during the conference day. We welcome students of PS 204 to an exciting foray into educational technology. This year, the MyOn reading program has been initiated. Students between the grades of 3-5 have their MyOn accounts and should begin using MyOn at home. MyOn has almost 5,000 books available free of charge online and it tracks the number of books that students read as well as their growth as readers through online assessments. Parents, please encourage students to read at home because data of their usage will be examined by the school and tracked throughout their school years at PS 204 and beyond. Over the summer, a MyOn contest was held, and students from each grade won the top prize of a PS 204 book bag. The top three readers were: Delyssa Cruz: Finished 510 books Kelydaya Hernandez: Finished 199 books Richard Phillips: Finished 122 books Parents who have questions about the use of MyOn should attend the workshops given periodically throughout the school year and check the PTA coordinator, Ms. Nissing for upcoming dates. Laptops are available from the school to students who do not have the technology to gain access to MyOn. Please see Ms. Rodriguez in the main office for details. 5 MYON Damos la bienvenida a los estudiantes de la escuela publica 204 a una incursión emocionante en tecnología educativa. Este año, el programa de lectura Myon se ha iniciado.
