3 Compulsory Education Laws E.C. Educational Code 48200 Compulsory Full Time Education Each person between the ages of 6 and 18 years not exempted is subject to compulsory full-time education…. shall attend the public full-time day school or continuation school or classes and for the full time designated as the length of the school day by the governing board of the school district in which the residency of either the parent or legal guardian is located and each parent, guardian, or other person having control or charge of the pupil shall send the pupil to the public full- time day school or continuation school or classes and for the full time designated as the length of the school day by the governing board of the school district in which the residence of either the parent or legal guardian is located. 4 E.C. 48260 Truant Pupils Any pupil subject to compulsory full-time education or to compulsory continuation education who is absent from school without valid excuse three full days or tardy in excess of thirty minutes on three occasions one school year or any combination thereof, is a truant and shall be reported to the attendance supervisor or to the superintendent of the school district. Copyright-2015 ©Los Angeles Unified School District – All rights reserved C.E. 48260 Ausentismo Escolar Injustificado Cualquier estudiante que éste sujeto a la educación obligatoria de tiempo completo o a educación de continuación obligatoria que se ausente de la escuela por tres ocasiones completas sin una excusa válida en un año escolar, o que tenga tardanzas de más de 30 minutos en tres ocasiones en un año escolar o cualquier combinación de la misma, incurre en ausentismo escolar injustificado y debe ser denunciado al Supervisor de Asistencia o al Superintendente escolar del distrito.

5 Absence Verification Verification for a student’s absence must be received from a parent or guardian –Students may not provide verification for absences. –Siblings, grandparents, cousins, other students cannot provide this information. 11 When does the school refer cases to PSA? When absences become excessive. When irregular attendance is having a negative impact on a students instructional program. Students who may be truant (i.e. absent without the knowledge or consent of the parent). Students who are in need of shoes or proper clothing. Unable to make contact with parent after all resources have been utilized.
