What is a reflexive verb? A reflexive verb indicates that the subject of the sentence has performed an action on himself/herself/itself. In other words, A reflexive verb is an action that someone does to or for themselves. Example: Afeitarse = to shave yourself Ducharse = to shower yourself Ceppillarse = to brush yourself
2
If the reflexive verb ends in“-se” it means it is not conjugated. It is in its infinitive form. For example: Despertarse (To wake up yourself) **(Notice the translation starts with to that means it is in the infinitive form)**
3
To conjugate it in the Yo form: 1.You take out the -se 2.You now conjugate the verb as usual by dropping the -ar, -er, or -ir ending and replacing it with the correct ending 3.The last step is to add the correct reflexive pronoun at the beginning of the verb to make it a reflexive verb again 1)despertarse = 2)despertar = 3)despierto = me despierto Yo - me Tú - te El/Ella/Ud. - se Nosotros - nos Ustedes/Ellos - se despertarse
4
me te se nos se Reflexive Pronouns These go at the beginning of the reflexive verb after you drop the –se and you conjugate the verb
5
Attention!!!! Warning!!! Caution!!! If it is a two verb phrase, you leave the reflexive pronoun at the end instead of bringing it to the front. For example: Yo quiero despertarme temprano. You still take out the –se from the end of the verb, since you only conjugate the first verb in the sentence, all you need to do is add the pronoun to the end without conjugating the second verb. 12
