2 Preterite is used to talk about: Specific occasion or a specific number of times Last summer I traveled to Spain and camped near the Tajo River. ▫El verano pasado viajé a España y acampé cerca del Río Tajo.

3 Sequence of events When I arrived, I looked for a place to stay and called my friends. The next day we met up at a café and then we walked around Toledo. ▫Cuando llegué, busqué alojamiento y llamé a mis amigos. Al día siguiente nos reunimos en un café y luego paseamos por Toledo.

4 Specific period of time, even if it happened repeatedly ▫Pasé un mes en Toledo y fui todos los días a las playas de Cádiz

5 Preterite Endings and Conjugations -AR Endings-ER / -IR Endings -é -aste -ó -amos x -aron -í -iste -ió -imos x -ieron

6 Preterite Irregulars -car, -gar, -zar verbs have spelling changes in the yo forms: Buscar- to look for ▫Yo busqué Llegar – to arrive ▫Yo llegué Organizar- to organize ▫Yo organicé

7 Estar –to be ▫Estuv- Tener-to have ▫Tuv- Hacer-to do or make ▫Hic- or Hiz- Dar-to give ▫Di- Decir-to say ▫Dij- Venir-to come ▫Vin- Querer-to want ▫Quis- * (don’t use the same endings) Ir-to go and Ser-to be ▫Fu -Fui Fuiste Fue Fuimos Fueron Root changers: Change the root and then add –er/-ir endings except 1st and 3rd person singular use –ar. (no accents)

8 Use the imperfect to talk about: What used to happen for an unspecified period of time As a child, I traveled to Spain with my parents every summer and we visited my grandparents in Cádiz. ▫De niño, viajaba a España con mis padres todos los veranos y visitábamos a mis abuelos en Cádiz.

9 What people, places or things were generally like or to describe the setting My grandparents were very active and kind. ▫Mis abuelos eran muy activos y simpáticos.

10 How someone felt or what he or she liked or disliked I didn´t like to go to the beach because I was afraid of the sea. ▫No me gustaba ir a la playa porque le tenía miedo al mar.
