3 Conjugating the Preterite (Regular verbs) -AR verbs: Yo: -é Tú: -aste él, ella, usted: -ó Nosotros: -amos Ellos, ellas, ustedes: -aron Por ejemplo, lavar (to wash): Yo lavé Tú lavaste él, ella, usted lavó Nosotros lavamos Ellos, ellas, ustedes lavaron

5 Vowel before the ending Verbs that end in -er or -ir, and that contain a vowel immediately before the ending, change in the third person singular in plural (él, ella, usted, and ellos, ellas, ustedes) from -ió to - yó and from -ieron to - yeron. The “i” has a written accent in all the other forms. Por ejemplo: caer (to fall): caí, caíste, cayó, cayímos, cayeron. Verbs that fall into this category: caer, creer, leer, oír, poseer Exceptions to this rule: traer, atraer, and all verbs ending in -guir (-uir verbs have spelling change to “y”, but no accent above the “I” in -uiste or -uimos.

10 GUESS WHAT None of the verbs we talked about today are even considered irregular, or stem-changing. All of them are REGULAR conjugation verbs…just some of them have a spelling change to think about. Those are for another day!
