2 Each subject area has a specific name that you will need to be able to recognize: 1 st Person Singular1 st Person Plural 2 nd Person Singular2 nd Person Plural 3 rd Person Singular3 rd Person Plural

3 In order to conjugate an –AR verb in the present tense (HABLAR – to speak), take off the –AR and add these endings to the verb stem: hablohablamos hablashabláis hablahablan

4 In order to conjugate an –ER verb in the present tense (COMER – to eat), take off the –ER and add these endings to the verb stem: comocomemos comescoméis comecomen

5 In order to conjugate an –IR verb in the present tense (VIVIR – to live), take off the –IR and add these endings to the verb stem: vivovivimos vivesvivís viveviven

6 VERBOS IRREGULARES en el PRESENTE de INDICATIVO IRREGULAR VERBS IN THE PRESENT TENSE Verbs that do not follow the regular pattern of – AR, – ER, and –IR endings are called IRREGULAR VERBS. The endings for these verbs must be MEMORIZED. BAD NEWS: Many of the most commonly used verbs are irregular. GOOD NEWS: Many are irregular ONLY in the 1 st Person Singular (Yo) Form and follow a pattern

8 -GO in the YO cont’d Observe the following conjugations: HACER – to make or do Hago, haces, hace, hacemos, hacéis, hacen PONER – to put or place Pongo, pones, pone, ponemos, ponéis, ponen TRAER – to bring Traigo, traes, trae, traemos, traéis, traen DECIR – to say Digo, dices, dice, decimos, decís, dicen
