3 ¡Pensemos! How do you greet a clerk in a store? How is it different than greeting your friend? Using your tools, write as many words about greeting as you can for 3 minutes!

4 Spanish Formalities Informal / Familiar People you know. Family and friends. People you call by their first name. People that are your age and that are younger than you. Formal / Not Familiar Strangers/People you do not know. People with titles – Mr., Mrs., Dr., Rev., President Adults / People that are older than you. People you show respect to.

6 Say “Hello” Hola The “h” is silent, so it sounds like “ola” Hola Hello / Hi Use this with your friends and family.

7 How are you? ¿Cómo estás? This is the informal form (familiar). Use this with your friends and people you call by their first name. People your age and younger. ¿Cómo está? ¿Cómo está Ud. (usted)? This is the formal form. Use this with strangers. Use with people that have titles. Use with people older than you.

8 I am fine, thanks. (Estoy) Bien, gracias. Be polite. Always say “gracias” after saying you are fine. * Please do not ever say “bueno, soy bueno, soy bien”

9 Be Polite ¿Y tú? – Informal With your friends, etc. ¿Y usted? – Formal Titles, strangers, older people. Always be polite and ask the person how they are doing. You can do this just by asking “And you?”

11 What is your name? ¿Cómo te llamas? – This is informal. FYI ¿Cómo se llama Ud.? – This is formal.

12 My name is… Me llamo … Please do not EVER say, “Me llamo es”! The “is” that you want to say in English IS included in the “Me llamo…”

13 Pleased to meet you. Mucho gusto Encantado / Encantada This is not literally translated. We are using Standard American English versus Standard Spanish. Never translate word-for-word.

14 Where are you from? ¿De dónde eres? ¿De dónde es Ud.? ¿Dónde? = Where? – De = From In Spanish, do not ask: “ ¿Dónde eres de?” The “de” goes at the beginning of the question.

15 I am from … Soy de … – Soy de Indiana Soy = I am … – Soy americano – Soy americana

16 Farewells Adiós Good-bye! This is used when people will not see the other person for a very long time. Hasta luego See you later – “Until then” You will see them again.
