“La persistencia de la memoria” (1931), Salvador Dalí

¿Qué hora es?
3
En inglés… Es muy fácil! There are a few ways! 1) the hour, then the minutes 1:30 - “One thirty” / 3:15 – “Three fifteen” 2) How FAR it is PAST the hour 1:30 “Half past” 1, 3:15 “quarter after 3” 3) How NEAR it is to the NEXT hour 3:45 “fifteen til (four)”
4
En español… ¡Es muy fácil también! 1) the hour, then the minutes 3:00 “Son las tres” / 3:10 “Son las tres y diez” 2) How FAR it is PAST the hour 3:30 “Son las 3 y media” / 3:15 “Son las 3 y cuarto 3) How NEAR it is to the NEXT hour 3:45 “Son las 4 menos cuarto” / 3:50 “Son las 4 menos 10”
5
Points to remember! IIf it is BEFORE :30 ---- use (hora) Y (minutos) IIf it is AFTER :30 ---- use (next hora) MENOS (minutos) IIf it is :30 ---- use (hora) Y MEDIA IIf it is :15 ---- use (hora) y CUARTO IIf it is :45 ---- use (next hora) menos CUARTO
6
Practicamos…you try! 1. 6:05 2. 8:20 3. 10:15 4. 9:30 5. 11:24 1. Son las seis y cinco 2. Son las ocho y veinte 3. Son las diez y cuarto 4. Son las nueve y media 5. Son las once y veinticuatro
7
The “new” other way Due to global influence, some people DO NOT subtract minutes from the up-coming hour… Aka they just state the minutes, no matter HOW large 3:45 “Son las tres y cuarenta y cinco” / 3:50 “Son las 3 y 50” You can use both… But the more traditional way is to “subtract” after :30 BUT… this is NOT the only exception
8
And ONE…It’s a bit tricky! More than just the new / old way of expressing the minute hand, you also have to be cautious of the ONE When you want to say 1:00, you say “Es la una” Do you notice any differences from what we have learned so far? You use “es” instead of “son” / “you use “la” instead of “las” ESPERA! HAY MÁS!! …
9
¡¡CUIDADO!! You have to use “Es la” for 1:00 to 1:30 What about from 1:31 to 2:00 ?? You have 2 options: 1) use “son las dos menos (minutos)” 2) use “es la una y (30+ min.)” What about from 12:31- 12:59? Sí! 2 options again... 1) use “es la una menos (minutos)” 2) use “son las doce y (30+ min.)”
10
Otra vez… 1. 3:45 2. Son las dos y cinco 3. 12:15 4. 2:30 5. Es la una menos diez 6. 1:40 7. Son las tres y media 1. Son las cuatro menos cuarto 2. 2:05 3. Son las doce y cuarto 4. Son las dos y media 5. 12:50 6. Son las dos menos veinte 7. 3:30
