3 What is a direct object?  The D.O. in a sentence receives the action of the verb.  The D.O. is the “who” or “what” of a sentence.

4 Unos ejemplos en inglés  I gave him the ball. Verb: gave Question: What was given? D.O./Answer: ball  We sing them a song. Verb: sing Question: What was sung? D.O./Answer: song

5 Unos ejemplos en inglés  We see the teacher. Verb: see Question: Who is seen? D.O./Answer: teacher  I have the pencils. Verb: have Question: What do I have? D.O./Answer: pencils

6 Direct Object Pronouns  Pronouns are used to replace the noun in a sentence.  Example I see the teacher. I see her. I have the pencils. I have them.

7 Singular direct object pronouns en español  Me  Te  Lo  La  Me  You (familiar)  You (formal), him, it  You (formal), her, it

8 Plural direct object pronouns en español  Nos  Os  Los  Las  Us  You all (familiar)  You (formal), them

9 Placement of direct object pronouns  When there is only ONE verb in a sentence and it is conjugated, the D.O.P must be placed directly before it. Yo tengo los lápices.  Yo los tengo. Tú ves al profesor.  Tú lo ves.

10 Placement of direct object pronouns  When one sentence has a conjugated verb and an infinitive (i.e., ir + a + inf.), the D.O.P. may be placed before the conjugated verb, or after and attached to the infinitive. Voy a hacer la tarea hoy.  La voy a hacer hoy.  Voy a hacerla hoy.

11 ¡Practiquemos!  In the following sentences, replace the D.O. with the correct pronoun. Tengo el pasaporte para el agente. ¿Tienes la identificación para la seguridad? Necesitamos los trajes de baño para tomar el sol. Juan ve a mí. Las chicas van a hacer el postre. Ella va a abordar el avión.
