3 What is a stem? First of all, remember that all infinitives in Spanish end with one of three endings: “-ar”, “-ir” or “-er” The STEM of an infinitive is the part that does NOT include these endings. For example: The stem of AYUDAR is “AYUD”; the ending is “AR”.
