Adding to our list…… There are many types of irregular verbs in the preterite tense. In Spanish II you learned the –car, -gar, -zar verbs ser and ir dar and ver If you have forgotten their conjugations, you can find them in the review packet.

In Spanish III, Chapter 1, you learned the preterite forms of hacertener venirponer quererpoder estarsaber andar Some of these verbs also changed their meanings in the preterite tense.

And now we are going to add to the list of irregular preterites………

There are stem-changing verbs in the preterite tense, too. These verbs change their stem vowels….. BUT ONLY IN THE THIRD PERSON FORMS! The endings remain the same.

Preterites with e – i vowel changes These are representative of verbs whose stem vowels change from e - i in the third person forms: pedirpreferir repetirdivertirse servirsentirse vestirseseguir freírdespedirse reír sonreír

Preterites with o – u vowel changes These are representative of verbs whose stem vowels change from o – u in the third person forms: dormir morir
